about my good friend, senator jeff bingaman. i think most of the people on his committee feel that he's a good friend. he's been a good friend and mentor to me here in the senate in the years that i've been here, and then also when i arrived in the house we worked with each other. he's been a very good public servant for new mexico and for the united states. and he truly can wear that united states senator proudly. my dad always used to remind me, he used to say -- he said don't forget. you go to represent new mexico, but he says you're a united states senator. and jeff bingaman has worn that title, i think, very, very proudly. jeff is a rare combination of character: brilliant and humble. for jeff, it's about the work. not about his own ego, not about a monument to himself. for three decades in the u.s. senate, he has been making a difference for the american people and for our home state of new mexico. public service is a noble profession when it isn't swamped by money and when it isn't held hostage to partisanship, and jeff is the best example i know of of nobility and politics. by

'm going to take a few minutes today to honor my colleague, the senior senator from new mexico, jeff bingaman, as he retires from a long career of service to our country. for 30 years, senator bingaman has been a dedicated representative of the people of new mexico, but for those -- for 26 of those years, he was a junior senior from new mexico. the only person that i know of that was a junior senator longer than senator bingaman was fritz hollings. he was a junior senator for many, many decades to strom thurmond. but 26 years here in the senate still makes you a fairly senior member. jeff served alongside senator pete domenici, the longest serving senator in new mexico's history, until in 2009 he was the most senior junior senator. still, mr. president, jeff bingaman has never been one to get hung up on titles or credits. if there were ever the conscience of this body, it's jeff bingaman, a man who has been called by others, including by ron dorgan, a -- including byron dorgan, a workhorse. that's really true. for three decades, he has quietly and with dignity fought for the people o

have fallen off a cliff. off a fiscal cliff perhaps. well, let's go to jeff flock who is at the exxonmobile refinery in illinois. i was going to mention the name of the town, but i will let you do that, jeff. jeff: a little small town outside joliet. you're looking right now actually at something you don't often see at refiners but sometimes do, it's called flaring. it is when a refinery goes back on-line after an unplanned shutdown, they have to burn off some dangerous gases, they have to report that to the federal government because it's a potentially dangerous situation. but that danger is nothing like the danger to the oil market from the fiscal cliff. take a look sat oil today -- take a look at oil today, pulled back a little bit after the big run up yesterday. and the run up yesterday i think wasn't so much fiscal cliff, it was more mideast action, but the story really isn't so much actually price. it is volume, the lack of volume. because of the fiscal cliff, huge amounts of oil money on the side lines right now. take a look at volumes. we ran these numbers and

are posted from texas to indiana. all this during one of the busiest travel days of the year. jeff berardelli at our yamiami station has more. >> well, this is shaping up to be a very stormy week across the united states. now, the good news is during the day today at least it should be fairly quiet. there'll be a small storm in the eastern part of the country producing a little light rain to the south and a little light snow to the north, but the bigger issue is what happens on christmas day. across the southeast, we could be talking about a widespread severe weather outbreak and maybe numerous tornadoes anywhere you see the red here from the eastern parts of texas, mississippi, alabama, and georgia. and on the north side of the system, both good news and bad news, we may see a very white christmas in parts of oklahoma, arkansas, and missouri. but on wednesday it moves to the ohio valley, great lakes, and interior portions of the northeast with over a foot of snow and wind gusts. obviously this is a very big travel week. i'm meteorologist jeff beardelli for cbs news in miami. >>> now, to the
